Roy - Done

Last nice dry day of the year? Forecast says probably.

Roy - almost done

Ran outta steam to finish the brazeons tonight, but she's got a date with the powdercoater (in Beanspeak, this is "powdy cookie") tomorrow. Then we have a date with using small cute children in costume to collect free candy!

BTW, after about 35 miles of singletrack, I can say that A) the Chupacabra front/random 2.0 back tire combo is weird as heck but super fun, and B) tire works fine on a Crest rim as far as I can tell - even down at less than 15 psi. I actually prefer the more rounded profile, too - IMO corners better that way when you're leaning hard, and the knobs have some chance of protecting the sidewalls/casing.

#Latenightbadidea

Rad. Not an ironic-name fan, but rad.

Um...Jim, where my Hugos at?

Should be room in many suspension forks. Maybe a warranty-voider, though.

Stuff still happening at WWHQ...

Not much blogging with the nice fall weather and the still-dry trails calling my name. Might even get a birthday ride this year, we'll see!

Clint's coupled 650b with every imaginable brazeon.

Mike shows off his silver brazing chops.

Curvy bridges are a PITA, but they look neat.

Quick pic for Colin

The nigh-stupidmobile! Super short stays and offset rear end, should be nimble as heck but maybe still semi-stable at speed. Geometry geek-out tomorrow if I have time.

White background, decent lighting, and I somehow still manage to suck at taking photos...

Random updates from Park City

In no particular order:

-I'll be asking all customers to pay for their parts up front when we have a parts order finalized. I've operated on a handshake-and-trust basis for 11 years but I have someone who has abused that trust (to the tune of almost $9000) and I can't take the risk of that happening again. My apologies. Be prepared to pay for your parts before I order them. Anyone know a good lawyer in CO? :(

Our new table is sick. Now we just need chairs. And friends.

-Framebuilding classes are full for 2014. I will take reservations for 2015 but no more students this year unless you've already been in contact.

Free performance bamboo socks with a frame helps dull the pain of price increase.

-Frame prices will rise to $1700 on Jan 1st. I'll remind everyone again before then, but if you want to lock in current pricing, you gotta get your order in in the next couple months.

Walt's terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day - or your lucky one

Edit: Kevin's having me cut off the front end and re-do it. Probably the smart thing to do, sorry to the folks who expressed interest!

Sarah gets fat!

No, no, not really. If anything she has been shrinking. Having a kid will do that.

But I did build her a fatbike in my "spare" time (ie, burning the midnight oil) and it's going to be fun, I hope. We live in a place with a LOT of fatbike opportunities... might as well take advantage!

You could put a Bluto on, but you'd have to accessorize with a DT protector!

Vital stats:
-63.5cm front center/70 HTA/90mm trail
-57cm ETT (curved down for a little extra room when her foot postholes)
-30.5cm/12" BB height
-41.5cm/16.3" (yup) chainstays
-170mm/QR in the rear and 135/QR on the fork
-Clearance for any 4" tire and some 4.5s (115mm of space @345mm from the axle), but not Bud/Lou type stuff
-Single ring only, and max 28t. You pay a price for that short stay/big clearance combo.
-100mm shell/66mm chainline. I intended to do 83mm but we decided she'd be ok on the wider Q factor and went for the shorter stays/more clearance options available with 100mm.
-Frame can take an 80/100mm Bluto, but doesn't have enough clearance for the adjuster knobs (so I'd add some kind of DT protector if Sarah ever wanted to go that route)

In essence, I wanted Sarah to have a fatbike that rode a lot like her XC bike and didn't feel like a big heavy slug on the trails. We won't be riding down frozen riverbeds or through the deep woods off trail (and Sarah doesn't weigh that much, so she'll get plenty of float from 4" tires), so 170mm spacing and all the limitations that come with that are ok. It'll initially be built up with Nates or Knards on some new Hugo rims (if they ever show up!) Should be a blast on the 100+ miles of fatbikeable trails here in PC.

Fall Part Deux

Thanks to Tomas for the fotos. I am much more handsome IRL.

Must be super technical, I look gripped.

Fall!

My favorite riding season. Of course, I never take any pictures (combo of dumb phone, laziness, and lack of talent) on rides, so you'll have to settle for Mike's.

Mark's Retromobile - Complete!

Yep, full on 1989 build kit. Plus 2014 Phil BB/King HS and tig welded frame.

Love dogs? Don't have kids or cats? Maybe you can help us.

I never thought I'd end up here - my whole life I've had dogs from when they were puppies (or when they found me on the side of the road) until they died. Friends for life.

But Pele and 2 year olds just don't mix, and after a TON of attempting to get him used to Bean, it's becoming clear that it's not going to happen. Worse, as more kids come over to our house, the odds of someone getting nipped or full-on bitten are going up and up, and that's just a disaster for everyone involved if it happens. He was a stray when we got him and I think some of his paranoia and skittishness around loud/unpredictable kids is never going to go away.

So - looking for a very smart, active dog who is lots of fun and loves to be outside? Drop us a line, but remember:
-He doesn't do well *at all* with small children.
-He has a twisted front paw from breaking his leg 5 years ago that never healed straight, and that has caused him hip problems - so he can't go on runs/bike rides. Hikes and walks are his thing now.
-He considers all animals other than dogs and humans food to one degree or another (ie, he will kill cats, squirrels, rabbits, etc, if he can)
-He generally does well with other female and/or submissive dogs but is quite alpha and will fight with other dominant dogs in some cases.
-He's 10.

Best friend Zoe from happy days in Boulder

The bottom line is that we can lock him away from the rest of the family most of the time and make him miserable, or we can take him to a shelter where I'm assuming he'll be considered unadoptable due to his age and behavior around kids and other small animals and put down. I'm hoping someone out there (preferably in UT but we're not picky) wants a dog like Pele. I feel terrible about this, and it's a long shot, I know - but the situation just isn't sustainable here.

New frame for Peter

Peter's first frame had a slew of minor problems and a major goof by me (toptube 2cm too short?!? I'm an idiot...) but he was nice enough to ride it while I built him a mulligan frame (the 2nd mulligan this year, ugh).

But what a mulligan! We squeezed in a Cane Creek DBinline, messed with seat angle and TT length, and generally changed all sorts of stuff. Plus now he can have a through axle on the rear end, which is great. Better cable routing (downtube) too.

A few pictures for those folks bored at work on this lovely Thursday:

Getting close...

Lots of tacks to make sure the pivot won't move around when I finish welding it.

Shock mount

Squeeze job!

Just needs cable guides. And powdercoat...

And yes, cheapskates: his original frame (140mm travel, 59cm ETT, 68 HTA 29er for getting crazy) will be available at a smoking deal in the near future.

DBC FTW!

I've been buddies with Groper (Peter Roper, that is) for many years. Sadly, the cafe opened as I was having a child and then leaving CO, so I have never been there, but I am told that it is awesome.

Check out the nice profile on BikeRumor!
